Amaretti cookies were created by the Lazzaroni family in the Eighteenth century to celebrate the visit of the beloved Cardinal of Milan to the town of Saronno. They are round-shaped, crunchy bitter/sweet almonds made with sugar, almonds and egg whites, decorated with crystalized sugar.
